Join us in recognizing Helen Keller DeafBlind Awareness Week, celebrated annually during the last week of June. This week honors Helen Keller’s legacy and shines a spotlight on the strength, achievements, and experiences of individuals who are DeafBlind. It encourages all of us to learn more about accessible communication and to support a more inclusive community.

This awareness is especially meaningful in the volunteer fire and rescue community, where communication, teamwork, and trust are essential. Understanding the needs of those who are DeafBlind helps ensure we provide the highest level of service—whether through effective emergency response, community risk reduction, or inclusive public education. It also reminds us that individuals with disabilities bring tremendous resilience, problem‑solving skills, and commitment—qualities that align perfectly with the spirit of volunteer service.

By raising awareness, we not only improve how we serve the public, but also help create a welcoming environment for future volunteers of all abilities. Together, we can strengthen our connection to the community and build a safer, more inclusive Frederick County for everyone.
