The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) invites individuals, communities, organizations, landmarks, and fire departments to join them for their 2020 Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters tribute for the week of September 27, 2020 - October 4, 2020. This nationwide movement honors those firefighters who died in the line of duty and lets the families know they will always be remembered.

Nearly everyone knows a firefighter. They are our family, friends, and co-workers. They respond to a stranger’s call for help without hesitation, and serve with pride and compassion. They are our local heroes. When a firefighter dies in the line of duty, an entire community grieves. Our communities show us amazing support and we encourage them to join us by changing exterior lights to red to honor the firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Every October, our grateful Nation honors its fallen fire service heroes at the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park, located on the campus of the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend is the official national tribute to those firefighters who died in the line of duty during the previous year. Those fallen firefighters are normally honored at a weekend-long ceremony but this year, the global pandemic did not allow for the weekend to be possible.

The public can further participate by viewing a livestream of the America’s Tribute to Fallen Firefighters at 10:00 am on October 4, 2020 to honor and remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the lives of 82 firefighters who died in the line of duty in 2019 and 21 firefighters who died in previous years. In support of this initiative, as dusk turns to night, various buildings and landmarks will be lit in red, including Frederick County’s Winchester Hall. You can be a beacon of hope to the firefighters and their families nationwide by joining us for Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters.
