As the weather begins to get warmer and the days start to get longer, you may be anticipating the upcoming Memorial Day weekend—and with good reason. Nowadays, Memorial Day is known for being the unofficial start of summer.

It is hard to believe that Memorial Day is right around the corner. Though the official holiday will occur in a few days, you need to be safe and follow social distancing guidelines, but it is also important to remember what Memorial Day is all about.

In the past, Memorial Day celebrations usually involve parades, flag ceremonies, and other formal public recognition to honor the brave men and women of the American Armed Forces who have sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. However, the COVID-19 pandemic social distancing requirement is causing cities and towns to cancel the beloved traditions to honor their fallen heroes.

OK, so this is not going to be the Memorial Day weekend that most of us had planned. There are ways to enjoy Memorial Day weekend while sheltering in place and obeying social distancing guidelines, from barbecuing to cool chalk art experiences, outdoor movie nights, camping in your back yard, tune into a National Memorial Day Concert, take a drive or support your local fire and rescue department holding special Memorial Day fundraisers.

Memorial Day is a national holiday that you can still enjoy at home. It is about remembering and honoring those who have made the greatest sacrifice for our country’s freedom and lost their lives serving in the U.S. military.

Have a happy Memorial Day!
