| August is National Traffic Awareness Month, a time to refocus on safe driving as summer travel overlaps with the back‑to‑school rush. This period brings heavier traffic, more roadway incidents, and increased pedestrian and cyclist activity. Travel destinations and recreational areas see higher volumes of unfamiliar drivers and unpredictable behavior. Commercial motor vehicle operators should stay alert for sudden stops, missed signs, and pedestrians entering traffic. Fatigue is common during hot weather and long workdays. Staying rested, hydrated, and taking regular breaks helps maintain alertness. August also brings increased construction activity, resulting in more work zones, lane closures, and detours. Drivers should follow posted signs, obey flaggers, reduce speed, and prepare for sudden changes. National Traffic Awareness Month highlights seasonal risks, but safe, attentive driving is essential year-round. If you’re committed to safety and community service, consider volunteering with Frederick County Fire & Rescue—your skills can make a real difference. |
