| April is National Volunteer Month in the United States, a time to recognize the incredible impact volunteers have on our communities. From a young age, many people are introduced to the importance of giving back, and in countless families, volunteerism is a tradition passed down through generations. Many of the organizations that keep our towns, counties, and state running simply could not operate without the dedication of volunteers. Fire and rescue departments are no exception. In fact, most firehouse dwellings in Frederick County are owned and maintained by the volunteer corporations themselves. While Frederick County operates a combination system with both career and volunteer personnel, volunteers continue to play a vital role in staffing and sustaining our departments. In 2025 alone, our volunteer and career responders answered 41,463 emergency calls—an average of 114 responses every day. Volunteers come from all walks of life, bringing diverse skills, experiences, and perspectives. What they share is a desire to make a difference—whether through small acts of service or life-changing contributions. Their donated time and commitment strengthen our community, support our mission, and ensure help is there when it’s needed most. If you’ve ever considered stepping up to serve, now is a perfect time.
