Frederick County Volunteer Fire & Rescue recognizes March as National Caffeine Awareness Month, a time to highlight the importance of wellness, alertness, and responsible caffeine use within the volunteer fire and rescue community.

Caffeine is a common tool for volunteers who balance emergency response with full‑time jobs, school, family responsibilities, and overnight calls. While moderate use can improve alertness during long shifts, excessive or poorly timed consumption may impact sleep, hydration, heart rate, and overall readiness—factors essential to safe and effective volunteer response.

As part of our ongoing commitment to responder wellness, Frederick County Volunteer Fire & Rescue encourages volunteers to stay informed about how caffeine affects performance and recovery.

Key considerations include:
• Tracking overall daily caffeine intake from coffee, energy drinks, or supplements
• Being mindful of late‑night caffeine use, especially before returning to work or school
• Maintaining proper hydration during training and emergency calls
• Recognizing the limits of caffeine—rest remains essential for safety
• Understanding individual sensitivity, especially during high‑stress or physically demanding responses

A healthy volunteer is a safer and more effective volunteer. This month serves as a reminder to make informed choices that support long‑term health, readiness, and resilience.

Together, we can strengthen the well‑being of all who serve Frederick County through volunteer fire and rescue.
