Frederick’s Annual Independence Day events typically draws thousands of people to the area. Carnivals are normally in full swing and Baker Park closes to traffic to allow fireworks viewing. As the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak havoc, this year local Fourth of July fireworks, carnival traditions and small town celebrations are the latest community celebrations to fizzle out in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is a worry that more people will try to hold their own displays this summer due to COVID-19. Fireworks, being explosives, are dangerous and not safe in the hands of consumers. The National Safety Council advises fireworks may be legal but they are not safe. Frederick County Public Safety Divisions are encouraging families to attend professional public firework displays.

For areas holding professional fireworks displays, onlookers need to adhere to the restrictions on outdoor gatherings. You are encouraged to watch the fireworks wearing masks from their vehicles, in parking lots - drive-in style or homes while social distancing in groups keeping 6 feet apart between groups, and washing your hands often, even outdoors, to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

There is no doubt the world has changed since we last celebrated the Fourth of July. The health and safety of our community is our top priority. We encourage the practice of social distancing and other safety guidelines especially regarding fireworks.

We want you to enjoy your holiday!
